i really do need some help! the other day i tried to open a word file and a
window came up and said that it needed to open in safe open so i said ok. i
finished what i was doing and everything was ok! when i tried to open it
again there was no icon for word on the start menu.but i was still able to
open my word documents. i have now tried to open a document but i have
received this message "This error message can appear if the document you are
attempting to open is corrupt. It is possible to recover a corrupt file or
its content by using either the Recover Text converter (may require
installation) or the Open and Repair feature." i tried to follow the
instructions but they never worked - then i tried to use my ms office cd rom
-to reinstall everything but that never worked and i got this message instead
saying that i need to verify that this is a valid patch package installer -
it is! but i don't know how to verify it!! i am really stressed out and in
need of help! this is my report and unless i hand it in i will fail my year!
help me please!

Looking at your problem, I think do a complete uninstall of MS office.
Restart your PC and then do a fresh install.

Also while doing a fresh install do not use any patches/service packs etc.
