I want to change the paragraph and character styles used in Word 2007 balloon
comments. However, when I select text in a comment and go the the Style
window, no style called Comment appears; in fact, of all the styles listed,
there is no indication at all of which style is the selected text.

How do I define the paragraph and character styles for all comments?

One way is to click the Options link at the bottom right corner of the
Styles pane and choose "All styles" in the "Select styles to show" dropdown.

Another way is to click the Manage Styles button to the left of the Options
link, click the Recommend tab, select the Comment Text style, and click the
Show button under "Set whether style shows when viewing recommended styles".
