Default What are the small box markers in the margin beside some styles?

I'm not sure what the small box markers are in the margin beside some of the
styles I create. Are they something to do with Table of Contents generation?
Also what are they called so I can search for information in the Online Word
Help.

They represent special paragraph pagination attribtutes are applied. See:
