Do *not* try to use a single style (and certainly not Normal) for more than
one outline level. To set up outline numbering correctly, see http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...Numbering.html -- Suzanne S. Thanks very much for the pointer to Shauna's article. Her directions were
great! But they didn't address how to get the "normal" style to indent, so that its left margin is the same as the numbered head's left margin. Must I create a separate "normal" style for each heading, so that the "normal" text under a numbered heading lines up? Thanks very much for your help! sue-d "Suzanne S. Word has a number of built-in List Continue styles whose indents match those
of the List and List Number styles. You might start with those. Or you can start with Body Text and customize it. -- Suzanne S. Wow! That Shauna Kelly website was phenominal!!! I'm a fairly expert user
of Microsoft styles, but have had issues getting the heading numbering to work properly ever since the 2nd or 3rd iteration of Word (yes, that far back). I think I've got it now. Awesome! Thank you for the info Suzanne Barnhill. "Suzanne S. Barnhill" wrote: Do *not* try to use a single style (and certainly not Normal) for more than one outline level. I have read Shauna's articles and the other referenced articles but the
instructions do not seem to apply to Word 2007 (for example, I did not see a tab labeled "Outline Numbered"). What are the specific selections in Word 2007 to get numbered headings in the style 1., 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2., 2.1, etc. THAT ARE RECOGNIZED AS NUMBERED HEADINGS when one selects "include chapter number" in the page number formatting? I tried modifying Heading 1, Heading 2, etc. per Shauna's instuctions, and the description identifies them as outline level 1, outline level 2, outline level 3...yet I still get the page-number error message that says the headings are not numbered headings. You must use the built-in heading styles (Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.); see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...ingStyles.html In Word 2007, the button that corresponds to the Outline Numbered tab in previous versions is Multilevel List. As before, there are several choices that has numbering levels linked to heading styles, one using the 1, 1.1, 1.1.1 format. To link numbering to other styles or refine the formatting of that list, use Define New Multilevel List. -- Suzanne S.
