Default change backup location

Is there a way to automatically save a backup copy of a file in MS Word to a
DIFFERENT drive. I've been having horrible Delayed Write Failed problems
which corrupts my MFT and renders my external firewire drive USELESS!

I'm trying to make a backup EVERY time I save a file -- to a DIFFERENT drive
so it's safe/mirrored in another location.

Any help?

Graham Mayor has written a solution for you, that will automatically save a
second copy to a different location. See here for information and
instructions:

wOW, I don't mean to sound offensive, but I followed that link
and was first put off by the incorrect naming conventions and
then the advice to send "backups" (which is not the correct word)
to a "floppy". Maybe I'm just in a bad mood, but I had to stop
reading there.

Datakeeper is one good app that will keep track of unsaved work
for you if you want to spend hte bucks on it or something like
it. There may be freebies too, but I'm unaware of them.
Datakeeper stays out of your way and you're never aware of it
doing anything.

If unsaved work is a problem then simply set the autosave to a
shorter period. I'm afraid I lost any feeling of credibility for
that ref'd URL.

Well, you misread it, because it says *not* to use floppies. In bright red,
even. Quote: "Saving to such media is one of the main causes of document
corruption (and thus loss of your work!)."

There is no such thing as AutoSave in Word, and the AutoRecover only helps
in certain situations.
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/general/AutomaticSave.htm

And I'm not sure what you mean by incorrect naming conventions? The page
uses "backup" to mean "copy of the current version of the document in a
different location". Why do you consider that incorrect?

Daiya,

Thank you for your lead to that macro. It was very helpful. I tried to
utilize the same macro in Excel but was unable to make it work. I modified
it a bit by replacing "activedocument" with "thisworkbook" but it still
didn't set up the correct alternate save location.

Any further insights to do the same thing in Excel?

Thanks again.

I'm afraid I haven't a clue how VBA works in Excel. Try this group, it seems
to be appropriate re macros in Excel.

The only offense is that you didn't bother to read what was actually
written. The page warns in red letters *against* saving to a floppy disc. As
for the naming convention, the macro uses Word's own naming convention. The
macro produces a true backup - ie an identical copy of the original. Word's
own automatic backup creates a copy of the previously saved version. and
again this is explained on the page. What the macro is intended to do is to
save the same document in two locations - nothing more.
