Default Strange Issues Opening Word Docs Over VPN

Current Setup
=========
User connects to work over VPN and attempts to open Word documents on the
SAN. Everything is fine, until HP printer drivers for a Laserjet 3050
All-In-One is installed. After installation, it takes up to 3-4 minutes for a
26KB Word document to open. Without the drivers, the document open in less
than 30 seconds. Everything else opens very quickly (i.e. PDF files, Excel
files, etc.). The only thing affected after installing the drivers is Word.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what is happening? I've been going over
different possibilities as to how the two are correlated and can't think of
anything. I honestly don't see how the two could be related at all; unless
Word is doing something with printer whenever it opens a document.

Does anyone know what steps Word takes as it opens a file that would be
affected by external factors?

I have a test setup at home with the same printer. The machine is, however,
not on the domain of the VPN I am connecting to. I have never experienced any
issues opening Word Documents.
