Default Microsoft Word problem

I am using 1997 Microsoft Word. When I type a letter or number, a black bar
appears across the screen. Then when I go to the next line, the black bar
follows me. I don't know what has happened. This did not do this a few days
ago. Can someone offer a solution?

See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=303507 "Black bar appears across the
page when you type text in Word 2002".

I had not heard of the problem affective Word 97 before, but see if it
helps.
