Default When I open my word document, no words appear, only the letter y?

I have written several word documents, and now for some reason when I open
them, all the words have been replaced by the letter "y". I have tried
reformating the documents, openning them in seperate programs, converting
them, nothing seems to work. Has anyone come accross this problem and a
possible solution?

Thanks

They are probably corrupt.
