Default Why do I lose toolbar customizations when I close Word?

After customizing my Word toolbars, they are no longer there when I reopen
Word. If I change the normal.dot template, it causes the program to crash.
I tried saving a blank template form separately, but it still opens with the
original normal.dot (uncustomized).

Thanks. Our agency just switched to Adobe Acrobat 7.0.5 and, sure enough,
this solved the problem.
