Default Turning Off Spelling/Grammar Checking

Since that setting is saved with the document, it should have affected the
display on anyone's computer *provided that the document was actually
saved.* If you did not make any other changes in the document after changing
this setting, it may not have been saved. It does *not* prevent a user from
running a spelling or grammar check manually, but it does prevent "Check
spelling/grammar as you type" from displaying.

On the Spelling & Grammar tab of Tools | Options, check the boxes for

"Hide
spelling/grammatical errors in this document."

This hid the "squigglys" from my view but not from others who opened
the document. Charles' suggestion was the one that worked.
