Default When I select text and hit backspace the text is not deleted.

In Tools Options Edit, check "Typing replaces selection".

if I select a block of text and type something else the selected text
is not replaced. In both cases the cursor returns to the begining of
the selected text. This has never been a problem before today and I
haven't changed any preferences. Re-booting my computer didn't fix
it.
