Sometimes when I close a document using Ctrl+F4, Word closes also. And then
sometimes when I close a document and Word stays open (with the gray screen -
no starting blank white page) after a while, Word closes. Which means I have
to click the icon to bring it up again rather than using Alt+Tab. This just
started a few weeks ago. How do I keep it from doing this?

In the Customize Keyboard dialog box, make sure that Ctrl+F4 is assigned to
the DocClose command.
