Default Word will not keep default "Save As" settings

In Word 2007 I have gone under the Word Options and changed the default
format to save files in as .doc (under the Save section). I've noticed that
it doesn't keep that setting. It will very often (about once a day) change
the format back to .docx. Excel is keeping the change just fine as .xls.
Any ideas??
