Create and use a numbered (or outline numbered) paragraph style with the
numbering defined as you want it or use SEQ fields, The latter will probably not update automatically. -- Graham Mayor - Word MVP My web site www.gmayor.com Word MVP web site http://word.mvps.org JustSomeGuy wrote: I wanted automatic numbering in the format 1 2 3 but NumberDefault insists on giving me 1) 2) 3) How to get rid of the useless ")"? |

But what if one needs more than the 22-character limit in the "Number format"
field on the Customize Outline Numbered List window AND needs the numbers to update automatically? SEQ fields won't do because they don't update after cut & paste or after adding/deleting any of the fields. A numbered heading style updates but won't do because of the character limit in the number format. I've also tried AutoText: (1) Create an outline numbered style with the number format desired (e.g., plain arabic numeral, no punctuation) then giving it a "ListNum field list name" on the Customize Outline Numbered List window (2) Type the lengthy repetitive text (= what I'd like to put in the Number format field in outline numbering) (3) Insert Field ListNum using the list name created in step 2 (4) Save as AutoText BUT, in a new document the ListNum formatting properties from the outline numbered style don't get copied over. Even copying that style from document to document (or to Normal.dot) doesn't copy those number formatting features. Any other ideas for unlimited repetitive text + updatable number sequences + formatting options? Many, many thanks. It's a bit of a stretch from 1) 2) etc to 22 characters? What *exactly* are
you trying to do? SEQ fields do not (like most fields) update automatically, but they are easily updated - use the macro at http://www.gmayor.com/installing_macro.htm to force an update after moving them around. -- Graham Mayor - Word MVP My web site www.gmayor.com Word MVP web site http://word.mvps.org Salvete wrote: But what if one needs more than the 22-character limit in the "Number format" field on the Customize Outline Numbered List window AND needs the numbers to update automatically? Thanks, Graham, I'll try the ideas at the link you provided.
What we're trying to do is for the legal field, where we often need wordy numbered headings such "Plaintiff's Second Set of Interrogatories and Requests for Production of Documents No. " with a sequenced number to follow. When our side is the one propounding the requests, we often need to cut and paste (and therefore automatically renumber) too.
