Default TOCs and hyperlinks

Hi,

My document has a TOC that was generated using mark text (we don't yet use
styles firmwide, so we mark for TOC instead).

Now I would like to add hyperlinks to the items in my TOC so that you can
click on them and jump to that section.

I've generated my TOC with the box checked that says "use hyperlinks instead
of page numbers", but I don't think that accomplishes this purpose.

So then I tried using bookmarks. I marked the target, and I tried to add a
hyperlink to the matching section in the TOC. But the TOC is actually a
code, so I don't know if I can combine a generated TOC with bookmarks.

Just as a test, I marked some hard text as a hyperlink to my bookmark. But
when I clicked on it, nothing happened.

Bottom like - I am trying to figure out how to create hyperlinks within the
same document from a Table of Contents:

1. How would I accomplish this; and

2. Can I do it using a TOC that has been automatically generated?

Thanks!

Dear Rosemary:
Your entries shd be hyperlinked if you did what you say. You can check
this by looking at the field code which you can display by Alt-F9. It
must say somewhere in the end \h (which stands for hyperlink).
Assuming this is the case, I figure that your TOC doesnt look like the
standard hyperlink (blue+underlined) and that you cannot click the
entries. The appearance is likely standard, which is not a hyperlink
appearance. You can change that by editing the TOC styles (one by one)
and check "preserve formatting". The failing hyperlink may be because
you have checked "Use Ctrl+Click to follow hyperlinks" in
Tools/Options/[Edit]. The hyperlinks shd then work by keeping the Ctrl
button pressed while clicking the link. Unchecking brings back standard
behaviour (just clicking). Does this solve yr problem?

Default TOCs and hyperlinks

In Word 2000 and above, TOCs (regardless of how created) are hyperlinked by
default. The entries do not have the Hyperlink (blue, underlined) style, and
you have to Ctrl+click to follow the links. In any version of Word, a TOC
(no matter how created) has hyperlinked page numbers even if the entries
themselves are not hyperlinked. Again, recent versions require Ctrl+click to
follow the link. If you want the entire entry to be hyperlinked (Word 2000
and above), add the \h switch to the TOC field.
