I think so. Try alt-F9, and the cross-references should show up as
fields, but the originals should not. If the problem is with the cross-references, then they aren't updating for some reason (possibly locked), but that would at least be logical. Right-clicking on a problematic cross-reference should offer the Update Field option--control-shift-F11 should unlock a locked field and do nothing to an unlocked field. If the original endnotes are really not renumbering themselves as you move text, then the document may be corrupt, and you could try Save as Web Page as described he http://word.mvps.org/faqs/apperrors/corruptdoc.htm Otherwise, I'm at a bit of a loss.
