Default Questions about working with XML in Word

(Using WIndows XP Pro, Office 2003) I have a Java program at work
that produces XML documents. Sometimes information needs to be
transferred between these XML docs. I've tried opening them in the
Windows XML Editor - but it really doesn't let me edit anything! I
open in Excel, but Excel creates a schema that makes things
confusing. Word seems to be the best for me so far - everything opens
up with tags and indents, so I can find like info and know where to
cut and paste across the XML docs.

Here's my questions:

(1) Some of this information has a Sequence Number tag. When I copy
and paste information back and forth, I have to resequence all of
these. Can I use a Word field that will automatically sequence, and
then save the field result only back into my Java-read XML file?

(2) Is Word the best editing tool to use for this sort of thing? Is
there a good on-line resource for learning more about working with
XML?

Thanks.
Ed
