i scanned doc., it shows up fine the top of screen says compatability,,but i
can't do a thing with it,,can't insert my text

Apparently you have Word 2007 and the scanned document is currently a 2003
version. Next, you need to scan the document in with OCR software to be able
to edit the text. OCR software isn't perfect so you're going to have to
proof-read the resulting document carefully.

As Joanne implies, a scanned document is a graphical image and not editable
in Word.
