Default How do I make Word 2003 ask if I want to replace existing file?

If you open a file and make changes and click Save it will
overwrite and save the changes without asking you.

If you want to make a different file from the opened file and want
to save it with a different name select File/SaveAs name it
something else and you will have a new file with the changes in it.

The only way I can think to be asked if you want to replace an
existing file is to do it in My Computer or Windows Explorer and
copy and paste it into the same folder the existing file with the
same name is in. I can't figure out why you would want to do that.

Perhaps you need to give more detail about what you are trying to
accomplish.

Tonya, more detail, OK. In Excel, let's say I have saved a file named
"Tonya." When I add, change, delete etc. to that file and then try to save it
again, one is prompted "The file Tonya.xls already exits. Do you want to
replace the existing file?" Yes or No. When one is dealing with multiple open
files, one can overwrite on occasion the incorrect file. This prompt prevents
that. I want to do the same in Word. Can one obtain that prompt to come up
automatically in Word?

No. Your best bet is to set the backup option, which will save the old
version each time you save. You only get the prompt if you use 'Save As' to
attempt to save to the same name. Excel works in exactly the same way.

Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately my "Save as" option does not provide
the prompt which is why I am searching for an answer.

Many thanks.

Hmmm. That is certainly aberrant behaviour. Checkout the troubleshooting
tips at http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/...peningWord.htm
especially the registry data key.
