Well, Unicode is "normal text." What are you seeing?

What you have pasted looks more like HTML. In Tools | Options | General (or
the Word 2007 equivalent), check the box for "Confirm conversion at open." This will give you the opportunity to choose the format that makes your document readable, which may or may not help.
