Default Word 2007 corrupts Word 2003 created template

About a year ago i created a template using Word 2003. Our company has
recently upgraded a number of computers and now a significant amount of us
have moved to Word 2007.

When opening the documents created using this template, Word 2007 will open
corrupted versions, while 2003 opens them correctly. After scrolling down
about 10 pages, the screen hangs, the Word window displays lots of thin 'page
tops', which duplicate the more you scroll down, instead of displaying the
pages below. It will also display header errors, with numbering appearing in
the middle of pages.

I have tried to copy and paste the document content into blank documents,
but this appear to carry the error with it, and when opening in Word 2007,
the new documents also have the same problem.

I am fresh out of ideas and the only remaining option i can see is to create
PDF versions of the 8 reports that have been written using the template, then
painstakingly convert them all back to a new 'clean' template i need to
create. This is the only way i can think of breaking the chain that carries
the error?

Has anyone got any ideas, or an explanation of what has happened here?

I can provide a screenshot if this will help at all. Thanks in advance for
your help.

Hi Ollie,

Can you provide a link to the template and a problem file?

Are you working in compatibility mode in Word 2007 or converting the documents to .docx?

Do you have any add-ins in Word 2007?

Cant exactly put any of the companies files into a public domain, i would be
crucified. But i can give you screen shots of the errors. I will upload to
photobucket and give a link.

I have just spent the afternoon re-creating the template using Word 2007.
Tried to use it for the first time and received the following error message
"The Office Open XML file Report Template 2008 (WIP).dotx cannot be opened
because there are problems with the contents."

This is after a clean install this morning, fresh out of the box, no add-ins
or anything else. Not working in compatibility mode, or any conversion
involved. Purely creating a 2007 template, then trying to open it this
afternoon.

Here are 2 screenshots that describe the problems suffered by a Word 2007
user opening the template, or any documents created using the template that
was originally written in Word 2003.

Default Word 2007 corrupts Word 2003 created template

The first illustration appears to show three empty paragraphs formatted with
your numbered heading1 style. Don't use empty paragraphs for creating space.
Use the space after/before parameters of the paragraph styles.
The second suggests a screen driver problem. See of there's an update and/or
reduce its hardware acceleration

Graham, thanks for your reply on my troubles.

the first image, yes there are 3 paragraphs there, but they 'should'
just be that, and not heading 1 style. Your point about spacing is noted, but
how can i correct this issue now? These numbers now appear on EVERY page
until it hangs when scrolling past page 15ish.

The second point is definitely nothing to do with screen drivers. This has
occurred on at least 3 machines that i have viewed, one with brand new
equipment. In my personal case i have recently updated all my nvidia drivers
just in case. I am certain that it is not a hardware issue.

Put your cursor in the paragraphs and see what style is applied. Use replace
to replace Heading 1 with whatever.

If you want you can send me a copy of the offending document to the link on
my web site and I'll see if I can spot the problem. In the meatime try the
open and repair option - however I still think the issue concerns the
display driver.
