It's a paragraph mark, formally called a pilcrow. You're seeing it because you have nonprinting characters displayed (http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Format...rintChars.htm). There's a toolbar button with the same symbol on it. Click that, or press the equivalent keyboard shortcut, Ctrl+Shift+8, to turn it off and on.
