I can't say for sure why it *is* dimmed but just extending on the point: In
2003 it also doesn't matter whether something else is selected even whether the active document *contains* a table - the command should still be active. The only times I've ever seen Show/Hide Gridlines dimmed is when in Reading Layout View or if the document is Protected in some way. Could either be the case here?
