Default Form Fields go missing during Mailmerge

Is there any way to keep form fields from being deleted or restoring them to
the original document after the mailmerge process?

FormFields and Mail Merge are mutually exclusive. You would have to use a
"roll-your-own" alternative to mail merge using VBA and a Template
containing DOCVARIABLE fields in place of the mail merge main document with
MERGEFIELDS. The VBA code would then iterate through the data source,
creating a new document from the template for each record and creating
variables in that document with the value of each data item in the record.
