The way that font sizes are determined, and therefore spacing before and
after paragraphs is as 'points per inch' aka ppi. It's printing terminology, but helps to explain. 72pt sized font is one inch/2.54cm high. 36pts is half inch/1.27cm high. 18pts is quarter inch/.63cm in height.
