thanks for that Graham now l know what is wrong with it it was driving me
crazy and wondering why it wouldnt work

May depend on a few variables, but on the View tab's right end is a
Protect
Document button. You may be able to click that to select a command
which produces the Task Pane, then click the button at the bottom
of it to Stop Protection... unless a password has been applied.
