Thanks to you all for being so understanding - we all do it though !
(especially my husband!) We think because we understand what we are
saying,
everyone else will. (Don't beat yourself up Fred - if it hadnt been so
late
at night, I might have picked up on it quicker!)

Anyway, won't happen again - have written myself a 10 page instruction
manual on what to do next time ;-)

I still need to make sure I use words precisely all the time. Sometimes I
see
an "easy" question, like this one, and I dash off a hasty response
without
thinking about it carefully. I know the answer, and to me it's an "easy"
answer, so I assume that if I say what's in my head at the moment, the
original poster will be able to read my mind. I knew what I meant by
"Insert
button," but Rosie didn't know what I meant. She had to hunt to find it.
I
could have been (should have been) more helpful in my reply.

Since I was replying to a part of the thread that didn't quote your
post, I
wasn't directly my comments to you (in fact, Rosie had also used the
word
"button" for "key").

You'd think that after this many years I would have learned to use
words
more
precisely. Of course I should have said "key" instead of "button."
But
hey --
I knew what I meant. Isn't that enough?

I will write "I will use words more gooder" on the board 100 times as
my
penance.

Obviously the important lesson here is the difference between "key"
(on
the
keyboard) and "button" (on a toolbar). Some people do use "button"
to
refer
to keyboard keys, but this is not correct and is just confusing.

Thanks Fred and Herb for your help.

The problem was really that I didnt know where the insert key was.
And when I went into Help there was nothing there that mentioned
the
insert
key!
However, late last night I found the Ins button on my keyboard (I
had
been
looking on the toolbar on screen) and problem now solved!

Thanks for your time and patience (My excuse is that I am old!!)

You're in Overtype mode. This [usually] can be toggled on/off
using
the
Insert key.

I am trying to correct some text I have typed. As I do so, the
following
letters are "eaten up" and disappear.
It is happening in every new document.
Can someone help please.
