Default Cross referencing between multiple files.

Typically, within a single DOC/DOCX file you can insert a simply cross
reference to another heading or figure for example (Alt + I + N + R).

My problem is that my company employs a standard where every section of a
document is contained within a separate DOC/DOCX file. I cannot figure out
how to insert these seemingly simple, yet elegant cross references in one
file that are pointing to a heading or figure in another file.

At least to simplify matters, all files employ the same heading formatting
levels etc.

How can I insert a cross reference in file 'A' to that points to a specific
heading or figure in file 'B'?

Thanks in advance.

If the figure or other item doesn't include a field code, you can use an
includetext field:

{ includetext filename bookmark }

Unfortunately, if the bookmarked area include a document dependent field
code, then you'll get an error message. For example, if file #2 contains the
actual text:

Figure II-7

....and you bookmark it, then the { includetext filename bookmark } field in
file #1 will work fine. But, if Figure II-7 is really:

Figure { styleref 1 \s }-{ seq figure }

Then you'll get the following error message if a numbered Heading 1 isn't
present in file #1:

Figure Error! No text of specified style in document.-1

....and you won't necessarily get the correct value of SEQ Figure.

So... yes, you can do it, but you would need to convert the fields in file
#2 to hard/static text first.
