In Explorer or any other browser you can use Ctr + or - to change the size of the basic display. Is there a similar option in Word? I know Ctr + does not work.

This is probably a bit late, but if you hold down the CTRL key and use the mousewheel, this will zoom in and out.

That's true. If it's an icon size issue of a high resolution, you can go into the view menu, toolbars, customers and click the "large icons" tickbox.
