![]() The key to outline numbering in Word 97-2007 is to associate each numbering level with a unique paragraph style. In Word 2007, here's how you should create an outline list: On the Home tab, click Multilevel List, and then click Define New Multilevel List. Click the More button to see all options of the dialog box. For each level, choose the desired number style and indentation. Also select the appropriate style in the "Link level to style" list. Specify any other options that you want. (For assistance with the options of the dialog, you may still find the article at http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...Numbering.html useful.) When you are done, click OK. Save the document as a template. Whenever you need this kind of numbering, create a new document from that template. To apply numbering to text, apply the appropriate paragraph style. If you want to modify an outline list in Word 2007, place the insertion point in the first level 1 paragraph of the list (for heading numbering, this means the first Heading 1 paragraph of the document), and click Home tab | Multilevel List | Define New Multilevel List. Make the desired changes. -- Stefan Blom Microsoft Word MVP "Kurt" wrote in message ... I use Office 2007. I want to create a traditional outline, instead of the odd default selections set up by MS. I want a format for headings that follows the I., A., 1., a., i. pattern. I had one set up as a multilevel list, but when I tried to use the Office 2010 Beta, it wiped out a bunch of custom settings. I need to EITHER change how Word automatically numbers the levels, OR create a multilevel list that I can keep in the library of lists that is formatted how I want, AND which automatically advances in numbering as I add entries. How do I do either of these? At present, I can't change the default entries that are created when I start by typing "I. [tab]", and when I create a multilevel list, it doesn't advance (i.e., if type the first line and it is "I.", hitting return just gives me a new "I." instead of "II.") |
