Default Word documents that save in XML format

I use Office 2007 and for some reason all of my documents are saving into XML
format (which I hate) and I cannot save them in Word format, and I cannot
convert them into Word format.

I have used Office 2007 every since it came out and have use office for many
years. My OS is Windows 7 - Home Preimum upgrade from Vista.

Can anyone please help me with settings that will allow me to save all of my
documents in Word format and how I can convert XML documents back to Word
format. I really hate XML, not sure how it go on my computer, but am
guessing it may of had something to do with Windows 7, as this problem (to
the best of my knowledge ) did not exist prior to my Windows 7 upgrade.

It is very frustrating and of course Wordpad/XML documents are really
terrible and have limited functionality. I love Word and would appreicate
help from any one hopefully an MVP who can help solve the problem by getting
rid of Wordpad/XML, or advising me how to change setting so my documents will
ALWAYS be in word format and never in WORDPAD/XML format.

I am an old geezer and really need some help here.

Thank you very much ---- Larry

No worries, it is very simple to solve that problem.

Once you create your word document and you are getting ready to save it for
the first time, make sure that when you click "Save-As" you click on "Save as
Type" and select "Word Document."

I don't know why Word is saving your files under XML format but just double
check the save as type section.

Hope this Helps,

Vicente.

Default Word documents that save in XML format

The default document format for Word 2007 is docx which is XML in a
compressed package (akin to a zip file). XML if anything is one of the
better improvements in Word 2007. You can however save in Word Document DOC
format if you wish.

From your description however what appears to have changed is not the file
format but the file associations, so that Windows is association Word
documents with an XML editor or Wordpad. You need to re-associate the files
with the correct application. Repairing Office 2007 should attend to that.
If not you may find http://www.gmayor.com/Document_Not_Found.htm helpful -
Although it illustrates an earlier Word version, the principles involved
should be similar with Windows 7.

Please don't use your age as an excuse. It is demeaning. Many of us replying
here are the wrong side of pensionable age.
