Hi there!
To add subscripts to variables in an equation in Microsoft Word, you can use the subscript button on the Equation Tools Design tab. Here's how:
If the Subscript button is grayed out, it may be because you are not currently editing an equation. Make sure you have an equation selected before trying to add a subscript. Alternatively, you can also use the keyboard shortcut "Ctrl + =" to enter subscript mode, and then type the subscript text.

Hi Mark,
What version of Word, and if Word 2007 are you using the Word Equation Editor on the ribbon, or the older MS Office Equation Editor? What is the equation you're trying to create? ================ "Mark Merrell" Mark wrote in message ... How do I put subscripts after variables in my equations? It is grayed out on the toolbar. Hi Bob,
I've got Word 2007 and am creating the equation using the equation button on the Insert tab. One formula I tried to create is the turns ratio for a transformer (NsubS/Nsubp = EsubS/EsubP). Mark,
Type an underscore to start a subscript, and type a space at the end of the subscript to make it appear as it should. Also, type a space at the end of a fraction to make it build up. So for your example you would type N_S{space}/N_P{space}{space}=E_S{space}/E_P{space}{space} The result will appear as you want it. In a similar way, you can use a caret (^) to start a superscript. -- Regards, Jay Freedman Microsoft Word MVP FAQ: http://word.mvps.org Email cannot be acknowledged; please post all follow-ups to the newsgroup so all may benefit. Hi Mark,
In your equation control try typing N_s/N_p=E_s/E_p where the Underscore character should subscript the character(s) that follow until you type an operator, punctuation or a space. =============== "Mark Merrell" wrote in message ...
