I am using Word 2000
I have never been able to use the outline feature without getting
frustrated, so I usually do the outline numbering myself. But now I have
been asked to create an outline type document using all numbers - Example.
4.0, 4.1, 4.1.1, 4.1.1.1 etc. I believe there are 6 levels to this document.

I am not sure of the correct line up for this type of numbering. I usually
work with only 2 or 3 levels and indent 1/2 inch for each level. But this is
not looking right to me with all of these numbers. Can anyone point me in
the right direction to see how this type numbering should be lined up?

Look under Format Bullets and Numbering. Select the 'Outling Numbered' tab
and click the third box in the top row. Word will provide the type of outline
structure you are looking for.

It's possible to customize the outline format using the 'Customize' button
on the Outline Numbered tab, but I have always found this to be an exercise
in frustration. I finally gave up, and I stick to Word's built-in formats.

I am amazed that, after twenty years, Microsoft has never built a robust
outliner into this product.
