Default Highlight and backspace no longer deletes-why?

I did something so that now when I highlight text and then press backspace,
the highlighted text no longer is deleted? Any suggestions?

In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit tab | check the "Typing
replaces selection" box | OK.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! But I do have one more question about this.
Until yesterday evening this was not a problem then last night it was. I
didn't change the settings but it just started doing it by itself. Other
posts seem to be saying the same thing - Why does this no longer work? Why
is it that "suddenly" "everyone" seems to be having this problem? Did some
automatic update change the setting? Just curious if you know.

I don't think anyone knows how these settings get changed (the WordPerfect
ones are the *most* puzzling). An update is a good candidate for suspicion,
but so are add-ins, which, on loading, often, as it were, "play back" the
settings that were (inadvertently) recorded by the developer; naturally, the
settings on the developer's machine may not be the same as yours.
