Default 2002 word doc does not display properly in word 2003

I have multiple documents created in Word 2000/2002 that when opened by word
2003 the punctuation displays incorrectly. for example in 2002 an apostrophe
shows as an eqauls sign.

These documents were evidently created in WordPerfect, using the WP
Typographic Symbols font. Although you can "solve" the problem by
reinstalling the font, it is better to replace the errant symbols with the
correct character in the current font.
