all my pdf files have been converted into Word format not wanted
nor expected, so how can I tell Word or XP not to convert them into Word

Okay, now that's just bizarre! What were you doing that caused or
immediately preceded the conversion? Did the file extensions change from *.pdf to *.doc? Did several documents change at once, or are they switching as you access them? It's unlikely they've been converted to Word format, but they may have
acquired the Word icon so that Windows tries to open them with Word. Right-click on a PDF file in Windows Explorer, choose Open With, and select Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat. -- Suzanne S.
