I am editing a document that was created by another user 3-5 years ago and
while I can use the thesaurus iand spell check n the portions of the doc that
I have created, it doesn't work in the original parts of the doc. Has anyone
ever run into this?

Select the text in question and apply tools language set language
apply the proofing langugae and uncheck the do not check spelling check box.
