Default word opens access in mail merge. Access is already opened.=twice

i have an access program that opens a word document that is linked to a query
in that access program, for mail merge of one record. When that document
gets opened by access, it opens a second access program (the same) to get the
data. how do i let word know that the access program with the query it wants
is already opened?
