As I scroll through a document, the page number shows up in a small box by
the scrollbar, such as "Page: 1," and then on the next page, "Page: 2," etc.
How can I edit this so that I can change the text to read "Chapter 1" or
"Chapter 2," etc.?

Having the chapter/section titles appearing in the scroll bar is controlled
by the use of the Outline Level. Either by using the built-in Heading styles
or the application of this to your own styles via the Paragraph menu.
Further customisation of this display box is not possible via the usualy
control menus.

Thanks, DeanH. Since I am not "fancy" in my documents, I have not used the
Outline Level nor the Heading styles and thus still do not know how to do
this. : (

1. To manually add a Outline level to some text, Format, Paragraph, Outline
Level, choose a number not BodyText. This text will now appear as you scroll.
2. To work with styles, see http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/index.html and
the section on Understanding Styles. Word is designed to work best with the
use of styles for basic and "fancy" documents ;-)
3. About the built-in Headings see the same website and specifically the
Numbering, Bullets, Headings, Outlines section of articles.

me to go back and add these. But I do appreciate the help!

So I take it your Chapter Titles are not a style of their own then, because
if they were, adding the Outline Level would do instances of the style
instantly.
Another tip, press F4 to repeat last function, say like adding an Outline
Level.
F4 works very well in Word, repeating most functions/actions. Reduced
affectiveness on Table functions but a great tool to speed up repetitive
processes.
Also Find/Replace will add Outline Levels, if you can find a common feature
of your Chapter titles, say a combination of Font size and Bold could help
you.
