Default Save to Office 2007 Format

When we initially installed Office 2007 we set it so that when saving it
would save in Office 2003 format. Now we changed the setting to save to
Office 2007 however it will not automatically save up we have to do File,
Save As in order to save to Office 2007 and now I am left with 2 files one in
a .doc format and one in a .docx format. Is there any way around this?

The setting in the Options dialog affects only the format suggested for the
first time you save a new (unnamed) document.

To change the document permanently to .docx format without leaving the
original .doc file behind, use the Convert command on the Office button menu
and then Save.

I did see that option - I clicked on it and when I saved the dialog box came
up I did not change anything because the Office 2007 (.docx) was already the
selected file type. When I saved I still have 2 copies of the same document
in 2 different formats. What did I miss?

When you converted and saved, were there already both .doc and .docx files
of that document on the disk? If so, Word won't delete the .doc copy. You'd
have to do that manually.

If only the .doc version exists, and you open it, convert it, and save it,
both versions will appear on the disk until you close the document or close
Word; at that point the .doc version should be deleted automatically.
