Default List Num field

Word2003/XP

A user has a document and is attempting to insert num fields. The "(a)" is
the way they want the number ..but they want the "(b)" on the next paragraph
as the example below. When I put in Ctrl+Alt+L instead of getting a "(b)" I
get a "Section 3".

What are we (me) doing wrong?

Thank you.

EXAMPLE

Text text texttexttexttexttexttext texttexttext text text text texttext
texttext texttext (a) texttext texttext texttext texttext texttext texttext
texttext texttext text.

You don't give us a lot to go on, but I wonder if your LISTNUMs are
separated by a numbered paragraph somewhere? By default, LISTNUM picks up
from the last prior numbering scheme in the document.

To get better control over this, give the number format a LISTNUM field name
(it's an option in More... part of the numbering Customize dialog). Then
insert a LISTNUM field that references that name. (Use Insert Field
initially, and then save the field as AutoText - you can assign it to
Ctrl+Alt+L or any other shortcut if you want.)

I'm sorry Margaret..I was not too familiar with using the "ListNum" feature
but thanks to you am now.

In conclusion..I was just informed that our third-party numbering suite was
interfering with the process..go figure.

Thanks again!

Yes, LISTNUMs are a bit of a forgotten corner ;-) Hope this helps you sort
it out (or fight it out with whatever your numbering suite is doing g).

Bruce Brown is the real expert on this - have google in groups for "Bruce
Brown" and "LISTNUM" for his posts if you want to explore further.
