Consecutively Numbering Pages Across a Large Number of Files
I'm trying to consecutively number pages across a large number (~50) of
files that are all in the same folder. I'm trying to use the IncludeText field tip that Cindy Meister mentions on her website (http://homepage.swissonline.ch/cindy....htm#PgOverDc). I've been able to link 10 files together correctly but with document #11 I'm getting a message saying "Fields are nested too deeply." I'm not nesting fields unless the chain of linked files is considered nesting. Is this the case? I was hoping this solution would work on any number of files. How do people who put books together with a large number of chapters (as separate files) handle consecutive page numbering? Does the IncludeText method actually work with a large number of files? Is there a better method? I'm using Word 2003 under Windows XP. Thanks in advance for any help/tips. Brian |

You might be able to work around this if you set a REF field to the bookmark of an IncludeText field, bookmark that, then reference that bookmark in the next document. Worth a try, anyway... Thanks for the advice. It seems to be working so far. However, I've come across another problem which is really baffling. I have my page number related code in the headers of the documents. If one of the documents changes in length the following ones do not automatically update. I thought going into Print Preview would do the trick but no luck. Even printing doesn't work and I do have the options "Update Fields" and "Update Links" (just in case Word considers the IncludeText field as linking) checked. Only if I go into the headers and highlight the fields and press F9 do I get the results to update. Very annoying. Does the IncludeText field not automatically update or is there a bug in Word 2003? Thanks. Brian |

Updating of fields that are not in the text layer of the document can be a
bit fickle. The example macro at http://www.gmayor.com/installing_macro.htm should do the job. -- Graham Mayor - Word MVP My web site www.gmayor.com Word MVP web site http://word.mvps.org Brian Smith wrote: "Cindy M." wrote in message news:VA.0000116c.2d3fb20d@vistapc...
