Default Help! Word reading fields merged from Excel as "0"s instead of da

When I am merging in Word (03) using excel data...everything merges fine
except for one column where I have dashes in the excel numbers (e.g., 34-D,
etc.) Some numbers are single numbers in that column and some have dashes,
they are from singe to quadruple digits. When I merge them to my WORD doc,
the numbers with dashes all come out as ZEROs. Why will Word not recognize
these numbers? (I have tried changing them in Excel to Numbers, to Text, to
Scientific, to General, but Word still cannot read them.)

What should I do to them to make Word recognize these numbers, please?
Thank you so much for your help!

In Word in ToolsOptionsGeneral, check the box against "Confirm conversions
at open" and then reconnect the mail merge main document to the data source
and when asked for the method by which the connection should be made, select
the DDE option.

Hope this helps.
