Default Word 2000 in Office 2000 offers only RTF now

I had trouble opening files using Word 200 that I downloaded from the
library. I tried opening the files up using rtf, and that worked. However,
now all word files now open only in rtf. It appears that the other
components of Office 2000 work.

Some of the formatting, of course, is now lost.

What is going on?

Never mind. Somehow the universe of Word documents were all being opened
using Wordpad. I had to go to the 'open with...' and changed from Wordpad to
Word. I guess once you change it for all documents, you change it for all
documents? Unhelpful.
