Default Month appears as "00"

Using MS 2007. When merging date field from Excel into Word, I've changed
the MERGEFIELD to reflect desired format -- mm-dd-yy. The month continues to
show '00'. Day & Year OK. What have I missed?

Use upper case for the MM. mm is for minutes.
