Default Office 2003 mail merge from Outlook Issues

Hi:

In the past few months only, each time I run a mail merge from Outlook
2003 to an existing Word document, Word opens both the existing
document, and a new blank document. I have been using this feature
for years, and has only just started happening. Any ideas to prevent
this would be very much appreciated, thank you
