Word locks up when I try to use it. I have closed out of all operations,
rebooted all to no avail. When I right click, it is scanning documents with
Norton Internet Security which I tried to delete through the control panel
because it is conflicting with Microsoft security and McAffee security.

Microsoft, McAfee security, Norton?
Do you mean you have THREE anti-virus scanners on your machine? If you
do, get rid of two. The rule is: one anti-virus scanner and one firewall
per computer. More than one is a guarantee for disaster.

No, it is not required and as you've discovered it can interfere with Word.
