Default Autoformat Gone Global

I do not use styles much, I format as I go; however, every time I format a
line or section the entire document moves to that format. I CTRL-Z which
escapes and leaves the line formatted the way that I intended but if you
don't catch when it does this then the entire document is wrong and I have to
start again. I have turned off as much as the help files suggested but the
document still accepts the current change on a line or paragraph and applies
globally to the entire document.

Extremely frustrated in Dallas!
