Default Placing text in the center of the page

I want to find out if there is a way to select text and then place it in the
center of the page, as when creating a cover sheet.

To centre vertically - File | Page Setup | Layout and under the Page area
Vertical alignment, select Centre from the drop down box. Does this solve
your problem?

To add to Rae's answer: you need to set the first page as a separate section
and then chose For this Section Only when using the centring option in Page
Setup, - otherwise every page in the document will be centred.

At the risk of getting my butt toasted, this is very easy to do in
Publisher.

True: but what's not easy about doing it in Word?
