Default Function of I beam symbol

In addition to the heavy vertical line of the insertion point, a light I beam
also appears. It wanders around in the window, sometimes going up into the
ribbon, where it causes unwanted changes that I have to correct.

How can I correct this problem?

Thanks much

Go into Word Options and disable 'Enable Click and Type'. It's the work of
the devil.

The I-beam is usually the representation of your mouse pointer when it's in
a text area. It should change to an arrow when it's over a menu or toolbar,
though.

Are you using a laptop with a touchpad?

I'm using a Lenovo S 10 net book with a touch pad, but I'm not using the touch pad. I'm using MS Wireless Mobile Mouse 3000.

The usual reason for a 'wondering' cursor is an oversensitive touchpad. Have
you tried disabling the Touchpad to see if that eliminates the problem?

An over sensitive touch pad was indeed the problem. I could not find instructions on disabling, so I removed the driver. Thanks much.

On most Netbooks and Laptops, one of the Function Keys is assigned to toggle
the touchpad on/off. Typically, you press the FUNC key +F7 or F8 (one should
be the Touchpad and the other the wireless).

I love that my HP laptop has a dedicated button to turn the touchpad off and
on.

On my S10 the combination Fn+F6 disables the touch pad. Thanks again.
